Winter Storm Update: Shelter in place

City of New Bern

Winter Storm Gianna has dropped approximately 15″ of snow across New Bern & Craven County. City crews continue to work around the clock to mitigate storm impacts.

Approximately 6″ of fresh snow fell overnight & our street crews never stopped plowing. Their focus today is on major streets & emergency response facilities first, then collector streets. Plowing takes a long time at low speeds to clear roads effectively. With 180 miles of city streets, it’s going to be a while. We’ve received reports of several vehicles (including heavy duty trucks) sliding off the roadway. Now is not the time to head out to see what it’s like or what’s open. Drifting snow & ice are a big concern with 16mph winds out there. Residents are strongly encouraged to shelter in place. Do not go out unless absolutely necessary.

Fire-Rescue responded to a vehicle fire overnight. The car suffered a mechanical failure in the snow. The occupants were not injured & were taken home in a firetruck. Shelter in place!

While we’re lucky not to have any power outages as a result of the snow, the load on the power grid is concerning. Customers are urgently requested to unplug unused, non-essential devices, turn down the heat a degree & reduce energy consumption.
