Vote to fill vacant seat could be close

BAYBORO – The Executive Committee of the Pamlico County Republican Party has nominated Sarah Davis for the open Township Five county commission seat. Davis is the wife of Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis. A decision to accept the Party’s recommendation requires a majority vote of the six current commissioners. Insiders familiar with commissioner proclivities suggest that a 3-3 stalemate is possible. In matters of this sort, any tie does not go to the runner.

Wednesday afternoon, County Commission Chairman Ed Riggs, Jr. released the following statement:
“The Board of Commissioners delayed the decision on this recommended appointment until November 6 to allow each of us more time to hear from our constituents.
These appointments are typically non controversial and unanimously passed. However, regardless of there being no legal conflict of interest and the impressive qualifications of Mrs. Davis, many of our citizens have expressed concern. This process requires consultation with the Republican Party, but the Board is not bound by any recommendations they may have.”
