Sheriff’s Office investigating Morehead City shooting

On Saturday, 04/08/2023, Carteret County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance at 706 Hedrick Blvd, Morehead City where two people were discovered shot.

Detectives say Jaime Hicks Long, 47, was found deceased inside the residence while her husband David Wayne Long, 39, was found in a backyard shed suffering from of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to Carteret Health Care where he died a short time later.

Jaime Long was currently serving as the director of human resources for Carteret County. Detectives have learned David Long had recently been dealing with mental health issues which was likely a contributing factor in this incident. Carteret County detectives are continuing to investigate this incident. No further details are being released at this time.

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (April 11, 2023) It is with the deepest sadness and heaviest of hearts that Carteret County Government must share that CCG Human Resources Director Jaime Hicks Long passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023, at her Morehead City home.

Jaime served as the CCG Human Resources Director for over six years and touched the hearts, minds, and lives of countless employees across our departments in that time. She brought over 23 years of valuable human resource experience to the County from both the private and public sector. Jaime was responsible for recruitment and hiring, health benefits, labor relations, contract negotiations as well as workman’s compensation.

During her time in Carteret County, Jaime led numerous human resource initiatives with the goal of attracting and retaining the top employees to serve the citizens of Carteret County. Recently, she instituted a county leadership management training program designed to proactively develop employees and provide them with new learning experiences. The first graduating class of this program was last month.

She will be remembered as a fierce advocate for the employees of Carteret County and a dedicated public servant.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jaime, a cherished leader of our Carteret County Government family,” said Tommy Burns, Carteret County Manager. “Her passing represents an enormous personal loss to each and every one of us. She was a brilliant friend, colleague, and champion for many, and her absence will be forever felt. Jaime had great visions for our county team and we will continue to carry out those visions. Our most heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Jaime’s family as they grieve their loss.”

In her honor, the Carteret County flag on all buildings will be lowered Tuesday through the period of mourning and celebration of her life.
