By Curt Hendrix, Mayor | Town of Aurora, NC
Aurora is a town with deep roots, resilient people, and a strong future. As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we are reminded that communities like ours are the heart of the American story — places where neighbors work together and progress is built step by step.
In recent weeks, there has been discussion about various ideas for improving our town. While we appreciate the passion residents and supporters have for Aurora’s success, it is important to share the Town’s official direction and the real progress being made through thoughtful planning, strategic partnerships, and community collaboration.
Over the past several years, Aurora has worked with the Aurora Leadership Council (ALC), the Partnership for Aurora-Richland Township Progress (PARTP) and other community partners and volunteers to turn planning into action. Our strategic plan laid out a clear roadmap focused on strengthening our economy, improving education, providing good governance, and investing in our community — a vision centered on making Aurora a premier destination in Beaufort County. Our approach is deliberate and designed to produce sustainable results for residents and businesses.
Aurora is seeing substantial progress in restoring essential services and expanding economic opportunity. A new grocery store, being developed by Goodwill Industries, will improve access to essential goods while supporting local economic growth. A new medical facility through Agape Health Services will expand healthcare access for Aurora and surrounding communities.
One of the most significant investments in our future is the Aurora Industrial Park, where construction began in October 2023. Located on NC 33, the project provides modern infrastructure and supports job creation. The development includes an Aurora campus of Beaufort County Community College, which will provide workforce training in skilled trades and offer educational opportunities for residents across the region. High-speed broadband expansion is also underway, strengthening connectivity for education, healthcare, and business growth – ensuring Aurora remains competitive in today’s digital landscape.
Aurora continues to make meaningful investments in quality of life improvements. Efforts are progressing to expand housing opportunities, including low-impact development plans to attract new families and support population growth. We are also continuing work to revitalize Main Street and preserve our historic character, reinforcing Aurora’s identity as a welcoming waterfront community rich in history and charm.
The Aurora History Museum is currently undergoing renovation to showcase our heritage and enhance cultural tourism. The Town, through PARTP, is working with the North Carolina State University/IBM Design It Forward program to develop plans for the museum’s interior and to determine which of our stories to tell.
Wayfinding signage has been designed, funded and will be installed in the near future to help direct visitors to key downtown locations and strengthen Aurora’s identity as a welcoming waterfront community. The Town is also partnering with East Carolina University, through PARTP, to develop plans for a small park and gathering space.
Additionally, resiliency projects funded through coastal programs are helping to strengthen infrastructure and prepare our town for future weather challenges, ensuring we remain a safe and sustainable place to live.
Aurora also remains committed to celebrating its heritage and strengthening community connections through community events and programs. As identified in our strategic plan, the Town has approved three major annual events: the North Carolina Fossil Festival in May, Christmas in Aurora in December, and the Aurora Fish & Farm Festival in late summer. In 2026, in recognition of our nation’s 250th birthday, the Town will host an America 250 celebration on July 25, in place of the Fish & Farm Festival this year.
Aurora’s progress is made possible through collaboration with volunteers, civic organizations, and community partners, including the ALC and PARTP. These partnerships support community engagement, project development, and grant initiatives that help move our town forward.
Our vision for the future of Aurora is grounded in practical solutions — strengthening local businesses, expanding workforce opportunities, enhancing community services, preserving our heritage, and improving infrastructure and public spaces.
We welcome community input and encourage residents to participate in public meetings and planning initiatives. Aurora’s future will be built not on unrealistic promises, but on partnership, planning, and steady progress.
Together, we are building a stronger Aurora.
