I am in the Johnny Depp Arts of Elysium competition, on Facebook. I am currently in 5th place. On June 11, at 9 pm PDT I must be in 1st place to go to the next round. It is the people who vote for the winners in their groups on Facebook. Everyone can place one free vote daily and donate for more votes. All donations go to The Arts of Elysium to help those in need. The competition runs through June and July. On or by August 6th, the final winner will be announced, and will receive $25,000; have their art work in the Artform Magazine for the People’s Artist, and have their art displayed in the Art of Elysium gallery/museum.
Why do I want to win this? This gives me an opportunity to have a great start on building my own art gallery. I have a vision of helping foster kids and others have a place here in Pamlico County where freedom meets the canvas to explore emotions in a healthy way, with play art.
Why is this so important to me? I was a high school dropout as a teenager. I decided to get my GED in 2017 and graduated in 2021. Amy Burke my GED teacher at the time had us look at art every morning in class. One day I painted her something, and that was the start.
In 2022 I graduated again from Pamlico Community College, from the Esthetics program with honors. About two months later, I got a call to take in a child. Art helped the children as well as myself. I put my career on hold with the Esthetics. However, I have formed over 150-plus paintings during the past 3 to 4 years. Art is great therapy in so many ways.
