BAYBORO, NC – On July 11, 2026, detention staff at the Pamlico County Detention Center identified an inmate experiencing a medical emergency within the facility.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was immediately requested, and detention staff, along with responding emergency personnel, initiated lifesaving measures. Despite these efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased.
In accordance with North Carolina law and established procedures regarding all in-custody deaths, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) was contacted and has initiated an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) was also notified as required protocol for all in-custody deaths.
The Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information may be released as appropriate and in accordance with applicable laws and investigative procedures.
