Temperatures will be in the teens tonight with wind chills in the negatives. The power grid is heavily loaded & Duke Energy has issued its strongest request yet to conserve energy, particularly from 4am-10am tomorrow (Monday) morning. Customers are asked to help reduce energy consumption as much as possible to reduce the potential for temporary power outages.
Public Works Streets Division crews have made progress today plowing primary routes. Those plowed areas remain slick due to compacted snow & ice. Now they’re spreading salt & sand in those spots to improve conditions. Some secondary roads have received initial snow removal. They’ll continue working on those tomorrow. As for tonight, falling temperatures may force our crews to stand down on plowing operations. It’s important to note that salt & brine become ineffective in the low temperatures we’re expecting overnight. If you must travel tomorrow, be aware of black ice which could have a significant impact on road conditions. Police have responded to a couple of wrecks today, one involving an overturned vehicle. Stay home if at all possible.
Fire crews have responded to several fire alarm activations & a smoke investigation. Please continue to practice safety at home, including keeping an eye on alternate heat sources. Keep space heaters on a low, flat surface at least 3 feet away from flammable items. Do not leave them unattended & turn off after use.
As a reminder, city offices will be closed tomorrow (Monday, February 2). There will be no trash, recycling or bulk waste pickup. We’ll keep you informed about these services when new information becomes available.
