Building Vandemere’s Future Together: The Heritage Connection Trail

By Sandra Snipes, Mayor

Vandemere has always been defined by its people—by the families who have worked its waters, farmed its land, and cared deeply about this place we call home. As generations evolve and change becomes inevitable, preserving and sharing our history becomes even more important. Today, we have an opportunity to build on that legacy through a new community initiative: the Heritage Connection Trail.

The Trail invites the community to come together to shape a future that celebrates our heritage and strengthens our town. It will connect Vandemere’s historic landmarks, waterfront, and public spaces through accessible pathways and interactive features. Stretching from the welcome sign to a future ADA-compliant fishing pier, the project will expand safe access to the water for all ages and abilities while creating a walking and cycling route that links the places and stories that define our town. Along the way, signage and QR codes will share local history, environmental knowledge, and personal stories—turning Vandemere itself into a living, shared experience.

This effort reflects Vandemere’s strategic vision: community excellence, improving quality of life, increasing access to outdoor spaces, supporting economic growth, and preserving our heritage for future generations. The Heritage Connection Trail is not just about recreation—it is about connection, education, and creating opportunities that benefit the entire community. The Town has gained a strong start through regional support to help move the Trail from vision to reality and position it for optimal growth; ultimately, what will make it truly memorable are the contributions and efforts of the community in bringing the Trail to its full potential.

For the Trail to reach its full potential, it requires the support of community members. Many of the stories we hope to share live with you—your memories, photographs, and family histories. Some may contribute time or talent, while others may choose to support the project through voluntary contributions that help strengthen and connect the Trail over time. Together, we can create a resource that belongs to everyone, reflecting the spirit, heritage, and people of Vandemere.

The Heritage Connection Trail is an investment in Vandemere’s future; one that strengthens access, community pride, and opportunity for generations to come. We invite all residents to be part of it—after all, it takes a “Village by the Sea.”
