Award spotlights New Bern’s ‘secret weapon’

Brenda E. Blanco, City Clerk for New Bern, hasthe distinction of being named to the 2021 Municipal Clerks Honor Roll.

General Code began this special recognition program in 2001 to honor the unsung heroes of our communities — Municipal Clerks! The program ran for nine years and was reintroduced in 2019. Communities and municipal staff across the country enthusiastically nominate Clerks who go above and beyond in their work every day. Out of approximately 35,933 Municipal and Township Clerks in the USA, only 220 were nominated for this honor in 2021. Nominees are praised for their dedication and hard work.

Ms. Blanco has been an employee of the City of New Bern since 2002 and has served as Clerk since 2014.

In a brief email, Blanco said: “Working in a public service position is more than a job; it’s an opportunity to help others and hopefully leave them with a favorable impression of their local government. This position has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people and form invaluable friendships.”

A native and resident of Vanceboro, Ms. Blanco has earned the designation of NC Certified Municipal Clerk and the international designations of Certified Municipal Clerk and Master Municipal Clerk. She is a graduate of the UNC School of Government Clerk Institute. She holds the position of District 2 Director for the NC Association of Municipal Clerks and serves on several committees.
