Counties, Towns Unite to Oppose Ferry Tolls

Collection Shacks’ linger from thwarted 2013 attempt

MINNESOTT BEACH – Seen here just inside the gate of the departure point for crossings of the Neuse River, this small enclosure – in place for more than 10 years — was originally meant to house toll-takers. However, overwhelming opposition and contentious public hearings derailed those plans.

Fast forward to 2023, and elected officials can be forgiven for thinking the latest effort is ‘deja vue’ all over again. Perhaps the best example is Pamlico County Commissioner Carl Ollison.

Monday morning, after he and his colleagues unanimously approved the resolution seen below, Ollison quipped: “Ten years ago, they put up those little toll booths, and left them there. It was a sign that they were going to try and bring the tolls back again.”
