This Thanksgiving Please Consider One Of Our Own

Vexie Maguire wears a type of amplification, but struggles to hear.

ALLIANCE – What is it we fear about growing old? To most of us, growing old alone and losing the ability to be self-sufficient is high among those fears. Our sight grows dim, and our hearing gives us difficulty with communication. The cost of things we need often means there is not enough money for food, clothing, housing, electricity, water, insurance and medical expenses. Fixed income becomes a frightening reality. Often our children live far away and cannot help as they are struggling as well. Many times, it is left to friends and community to step up and help as life becomes desperate. The money is gone and there is not enough energy and ability left to go back to work. Isolation and loneliness take hold of our days and nights. In those times growing old can be overwhelming and our fears become a reality.

VEXIE MAGUIRE is experiencing those fears.

Miss Vexie has lived her entire life in Pamlico County. Like many Pamlico County Natives, she found a way to live and make a life in this place we love, “Down the County.”

Miss Vexie worked at the County Schools when her children were small. She has done volunteer work at Hospice in Bayboro and has given her Life to Pamlico County. Today circumstances require her to depend on her friends for help. Many of those friends have pitched in to restore her home that was flooded making it livable once again. When Miss Vexie suffered a stroke, she incurred overwhelming medical expenses beyond her means. During her recovery, members of our little Church and Friends from The County Opry pitched in to make her home ready for her return. She is home now, but her expenses and needs have exceeded the ability of friends to supply all she requires to live self-sufficient. Even as Hospice, Restore, and Habitat of Pamlico County have done so very much to help – I am seeking your help for Miss Vexie.

Her yard features a huge tree – once deemed the county’s second largest sycamore.

She is able to take care of herself at home, but she needs help with her cost of living.  She also must address her hearing loss with hearing aids or cochlear implants.  Her Friends and our Church are helping, but we are asking for assistance in her name to go directly to her needs.

Miss Vexie has given her life to Pamlico County and now she is in need of help from We, the People of Pamlico County. I am honored by the hard work of volunteers from The County Opry and Our Church. I am asking humbly for your kindness and concerns. With your assistance, I believe Miss Vexie can find some solace and relief from her difficult times. With our help, I also believe she can be brought from the isolation, which occurs when hearing is lost. We are working toward that end. Thank you so much for your consideration.
