BAYBORO – On Dec. 21, the Iron Horsemen Motorcycle Club of North Carolina, represented by ‘Bam Bam’ (second from right), presented a check for $1850 to the Pamlico County Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans represented by, from left, Andre Davis, Larry Summers, and James Banks.
This is the third consecutive year that the club has supported the local DAV Chapter. Many of the local Iron Horsemen members are veterans and helped raise funds for the initial purchase of the van.
Summers explained that the Chapter will soon resume its regular program of driving veterans to medical appointments with the Veterans Administration. The primary facilities supported are the Durham VA hospital, the Greenville VA Clinic, and the Morehead City VA clinic. Some smaller specialized VA clinics in the Durham VA region are also supported.
The Van was purchased in 2014 by the Disabled American Veterans. The Pamlico County Chapter provided – from many generous donations – half of the acquisition costs. The other half was provided by the Disabled American Veterans National Trust Fund. Donations are always welcome and the group can provide benefactors with its non-profit fund raising information upon request.
More volunteer drivers are needed. A pool of eight is ideal, but the number has now dwindled to just four who are available. The VA process to approve drivers is slow and complicated, but Summers and others can facilitate all new applications.
