Editor’s note:  Carl Ollison is the longest serving of Pamlico County’s seven elected commissioners. He represents Township 4, which encompasses all of Pamlico County’s northeast corner.

BAYBORO – Property taxes are going up in Pamlico County. If you want taxes to go up, then please stay home on Monday night, June 5. But if — like me — you think higher taxes are bad for our poor county, then please show up at 7 pm on Monday night, June 5.

That’s the time and date for the next meeting of the Board of Commissioners for Pamlico County.  And, it happens on the second floor of the Courthouse in Bayboro.

If enough people show up, I intend to make a motion to reverse a decision reached on May 22 to increase your property taxes. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE – just show up on June 5. You will not be required to speak.

Just show up to demonstrate your opposition to higher taxes.

I have served on the Pamlico County Board of Commissioners longer than any of my colleagues. The most important thing I have learned over the years is this:

THE MORE MONEY THAT GOVERNMENT GETS, THE MORE MONEY THAT GOVERNMENT SPENDS.

Let me repeat that:

THE MORE MONEY THAT GOVERNMENT GETS, THE MORE MONEY THAT GOVERNMENT SPENDS.

Many, many of our citizens live on fixed incomes. Higher taxes mean that these people – who now are barely scraping by – will have less money to spend on the essentials of life. There should be more to life than just work, and taxes.

Even if you and your family can afford higher property taxes, please remember that many of your neighbors, friends, and those less fortunate cannot tolerate a higher tax bill.

This county does not need more of our hard-earned money!  The county has a savings account known as the Fund Balance. That money now equals 45 percent of what we normally spend in the county over the next 12 months.

It is a huge amount of money!  Why must we give county government more money, when there are plenty of savings?  Also, savings are seldom needed! Usually, the county’s annual budget projects that we will need to use some of our savings in order to pay all of the bills – but that rarely happens.

The savings are there, if needed. But, actual experience has shown us that savings have not been needed to balance our budget from year to year.

LET’S STOP FEEDING THE GOVERNMENTAL BEAST!  Please help me reverse this decision to increase your property taxes. I am asking all taxpayers of Pamlico County to attend the Monday, June 5, meeting of the Pamlico County Commission.

For more information, call me, Carl Ollison, at (252) 670-3247. Please, please help me roll back this unjustified increase in your property taxes. Mark your calendars – 7 pm on Monday, June 5, at the Courthouse (second floor) in Bayboro.
