PAMLICO COUNTY – Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 2 when forecasts of severe winter weather first became certain, the 12 guys seen above, aided by long-time office administrator Sylvia Bell, launched an all-out offensive, working 12 hours on and 12 hours off — for six straight days!

The goal? Clear local roadways as quickly, safely, and efficiently as humanly possible. The result? Mission accomplished. In fact, several county motorists familiar with roads in eastern North Carolina said Pamlico County surfaces had become the envy of other DOT crews elsewhere. .

In a brief interview Wednesday, Alvie Lee, Pamlico County Transportation Supervisor, had praise for his men.

“I’ve really got to hand it to my guys,” said Lee. “They faced dilemmas of their own – water pipes frozen at their homes, taking care of families, and other things, but they got it done, and no one got hurt!”
