CHAPEL HILL – Seen here in quieter times and a fixture on the UNC-CH campus since 1913, this statue was the focus Tuesday night for a crowd of college students and outside agitators, who clamored for its removal. Perhaps the rowdies were unaware that ‘Silent Sam’ was originally erected to commemorate all 321 Carolina students who died while fighting in the Civil War. According to legend, the nickname comes because the young soldier finds himself out of ammunition for his rifle.
