LIZABETH CITY — For the last two years, Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church in Hertford has helped those in need through their LOVE PQ project. Each summer, youth groups from the church go out into the Perquimans area and perform various yard-cleaning work for residents who are unable to do so.

Last year 70 youth and adult volunteers spent approximately 1200 hours completing work on 22 homes.

River City CDC has been involved with the Group Work Camps for over 12 years. These work camps bring in various church youth groups from across the country to perform free minor home repairs for elderly, low-income, veterans, and disabled individuals. Previous work camps have had a great economic impact in the community, and the quality of life of the individuals served through these camps have been greatly improved.

This summer River City CDC and Bagley Swamp Church are joining forces to serve those in need in both the Pasquotank and Perquimans County areas. The combined Youth Work Camp Home Repair Initiative will include adult and youth volunteers from the surrounding area that will perform such work as: porch repair/construction, step repair, exterior painting, interior painting, wheelchair ramp repair and construction, mobile home skirting, and yard clean-up.

Youth Camp is already taking place in Perquimans County and recently concluded in Pasquotank County for week of June 22 – 26, 2015.

This community effort will have a significant impact on the lives of those in need. Volunteers to donate their time, energy, skills and resources are being sought. A monetary contribution will help with the purchase of needed building materials. Adult and youth volunteers are needed to serve on work crews and coordinate activities. Additionally, skilled contractors can help with surveying proposed worksites and assessing needed materials. Together we can make a difference in our community.
