GRANTSBORO — Piggly Wiggly has been cleared to open its doors at 7 am Monday morning, having been closed for just a single day after a Saturday night fire in an adjacent business — located in a separate, non-grocery area of the large building.

Smoke produced by a fire at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store prompted the one-day closure. Discovered about 7:45 pm Saturday, the alarm triggered a massive response from almost all of the county’s nine volunteer fire departments.

Sunday, staffers and cleaning contractors worked tirelessly — under the supervision of Health Department officials — who gave the re-opening a thumbs-up late Sunday afternoon.

Insiders familiar with the situation expect a large turnout Monday from members of the community — in a show of support. Affectionately known as THE PIG, the beloved store is owned and operated by hands-on entrepreneur Billy Flockhart, and has been a fixture for decades at Pamlico County’s busiest intersection.
