NEW BERN — CarolinaEast Medical Center has achieved the Healthgrades Outstanding Achievement Award for 2017.

This puts the hospital among the top 15 percent nationwide for overall patient satisfaction.

Healthgrades, an online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, evaluated 3,489 hospitals nationally that submitted at least 100 patient experience surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Of all eligible hospitals, 2,941 met those requirements with 443 hospitals, including CarolinaEast, outperforming their peers based on patients’ responses.

“Patient experience metrics resonate with consumers as they evaluate hospitals and select where they want to receive care,” said Brad Bowman, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “We commend those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades 2017 Outstanding Patient Experience Award for their commitment to delivering superior care experiences to patients during a hospital stay.”

Healthgrades has collected nearly five million patient satisfaction surveys using nine questions (adapted from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services survey) to help prospective patients understand the following:

  • Likelihood of recommending doctor to family and friends
  • Office and Staff
  • Ease of scheduling urgent appointments
  • Office environment, cleanliness, comfort, etc.
  • Staff friendliness and courteousness
  • Total wait time (waiting and exam rooms)
  • Experience with the doctor
  • Level of trust in provider’s decisions
  • How well provider explains medical condition(s)
  • How well provider listens and answers questions
  • Spends appropriate amount of time with patients

The questions range from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as pain management and responsiveness to patients’ needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family.

“We are indeed proud to be recognized as one of the best in treating our patients the way they want to be treated,” said Ray Leggett, President and Chief Executive Officer of CarolinaEast. “When our patients come to the only five-star hospital in the state of North Carolina, they expect and deserve to have the very best experience. This national recognition is confirmation that we are providing that,” he added.
