Hundreds of paddlers from all walks of life! Spectators free!

RIVER DUNES – The world’s fastest growing water sport, Dragon Boat Racing, offers a wide variety of area teams an opportunity to raise funds for charities of their choice. In 2018, four local nonprofits – HeartWorks, Fishes & Loaves Food Bank, Pamlico County Community Foundation, and HOPE Clinic’s ‘New Beginnings’ program – are expected to share the ‘Year of Hope’ spotlight.

Grace Harbor Marina at River Dunes (on the outskirts of Oriental) has emerged in recent years to become one of the most popular Dragon Boat Racing venues in the entire southeast United States! Spectators ring the oval-shaped site as crews – which vary in makeup, style, intensity, and purpose –
compete across three different Divisions: Military, Community & Survivor!

Last minute sign-ups are always welcome. Text your name and phone number to (252) 675-9424, and you will be assigned to a team. Veteran paddlers agree that the modest $40 fee, which includes a T-shirt, offers plenty of fun and excitement during the 4 to 5-hour competition.

Often called the ‘ultimate team sport,’ Dragon Boat racing accommodates a wide spectrum of ages and skill levels, ranging from novice to experienced. As spectators will attest, teams that synchronize the
simultaneous strokes of 20 different paddlers always seem to fare better that those who rely upon sheer muscle.

On the water, those 42-foot boats that quickly, efficiently, and smoothly power themselves across a long 300-meter course are always the ones who reign supreme!

Many thanks to supporters throughout the region. Festival organizers invite everyone to attend this free event, set for Saturday, Aug. 11, beginning at 9 a.m. And, be sure to bring a lawn chair, sunscreen, and plenty to drink! Vendors available for lunch and snacks!
