BEAUFORT, NC – A 44-year-old Beaufort man died from injuries suffered in a suicide hanging from the Gallants Channel Bridge Monday morning.

The suicide was reported to law enforcement officials at 9:52 a.m. The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report as a possible suicide on the eastbound side of the bridge and that’s where deputies spotted a rope tied around the concrete railing of the bridge with a man hanging from the opposite end of the rope.

Motorists stated they saw a man tying a rope around the concrete railing of the bridge, climb over the railing, sit down on the railing and jump off the edge of the bridge with a rope secured around his neck.

“Based on evidence and witness statements, there are no signs of foul play,” said Sheriff Asa Buck.

Patrol vehicles with the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office and Beaufort Police Department blocked off the area and briefly closed the bridge to bring down the body before the road was re-opened for traffic.

Out of respect for the family, the name of the deceased is not being released.
