Law enforcers busy with drug arrests

Serious offenses, hefty bail, overdose

Over the last week, The Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit, along with Investigators from The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, The Jones County Sheriff’s Office and The Craven County Sheriff’s Office, have arrested and charged several criminal suspects for their role in distributing narcotics in Pamlico County and throughout Eastern North Carolina.

On Wednesday, May 31st, 2017, Investigators executed a traffic stop on a vehicle being operated by William Scott Smith in the Maribel Community of Pamlico County. During the traffic stop Investigators established probably cause to search the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, Investigators located 19 bindles (individually packaged bags) of heroin weighing approximately 2.5 grams, 29 suboxone strips and $489.00 in Us Currency. Both William Smith and the passenger, Robbin Carter Smith, were arrested and charged.

On Wednesday, May 31st, 2017, Investigators executed a search warrant at the residence of Edward Cowell and Melissa Henries of 16543 NC Hwy 55 in Stonewall NC. The search warrant is a result of the sheriff’s office receiving numerous complaints of drug activity from community members. After receiving those complaints, Investigators made several controlled purchases of pills and cocaine from the residence. Both Edward Cowell and Melissa Henries were arrested and charged. More charges are expected in this case.

On Sunday, May 28th, 2017, Deputies responded to a residence on NC Hwy 55 in Reelsboro NC, in reference to an apparent drug overdose. Narcan was administered by law enforcement and the victim was transported to Carolina East Medical Center for evaluation. As a result of the investigation, Investigators and NC Probation and Parole Officers conducted a search of the residence on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017. As a result of the search, Kiersteen Popperwill was arrested and charges. Popperwill was on Parole at the time of the incident.

On Friday, June 2nd, 2017, Investigators executed a traffic stop on a vehicle on NC Hwy 55 in Reelsboro. Investigators received information that Basir Humphrey would be traveling from New Bern to Reelsboro with a quantity of heroin. While searching the vehicle, Investigators located approximately 9 grams of heroin and $473.00 in US Currency. Basir Humphrey and Rayna Novash were charged and arrested.
