High-speed July 4 chase ends with crash of motorcyclist

On Sunday, July 4th 2021, at approximately 12:10 a.m. Deputies from the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a drivers license check point in the Arapahoe area of Pamlico County. While conducting the check point a motorcycle turned around on Kershaw Road to avoid law enforcement. Two deputies gave chase at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. After approximately 7 miles the motorcycle crashed into a cornfield at the intersection of NC 55 and Kershaw Road near Oriental. The operator identified as Zane Marcus, 27, suffered injuries and was airlifted to Vidant in Greenville. Deputies recovered approximately 2 ounces of Methamphetamine, a Glock handgun, and a small amount of marijuana from Marcus at the scene. During the investigation Deputies discovered that the motorcycle was reported stolen, and that Marcus was a convicted felon.

It was determined, based on evidence located at the scene, that Marcus had a passenger on the motorcycle that fled the scene following the crash. An exhaustive land and air search was conducted by the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Highway Patrol Air Unit to locate the passenger without success.

Felony Flee to Elude
Trafficking in Methamphetamine
Felony Possession of Stolen Property
Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Possession of Marijuana
