On 01/16/2018, Carteret County deputies arrested Linda Gibson, 72, of Wetherington Landing Road in Stella for embezzling money from the Stella Volunteer Fire Department.

Detectives say Gibson was treasurer for the fire department for the past twenty years and is being charged with three counts of embezzlement from April of 2014 through September of 2016.

Gibson is responsible for the misappropriation of $12,000
(twelve-thousand) including using the departments ATM cards to collect cash and pay numerous personal bills, which were not related to the official business of the Stella Fire Department.

The investigation also uncovered that Gibson submitted altered and fictitious invoices to the Carteret County finance office in an attempt to cover up checks she had written, endorsed, and cashed, while other checks paid her personal expenses. At the present time the case is still under investigation and additional charges may be sought.

Sheriff Asa Buck praised the investigative work of the North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigative Division as well as his detectives assigned to the case.

Gibson was released on a $10,000.00 bond and had her first court appearance on 01/17/2018.
