Elizabeth City Farmers Market: A place for enjoyment as well as business

ELIZABETH CITY — The Farmers Market at the Waterfront Park continues every Saturday with numerous vendors and customers. Many people come to the market to purchase locally grown food. But there are more vendors other than the farmers. There are vendors selling custom made jewelry items, fresh baked goods, custom made wood products and, of course, those selling locally grown vegetables of all types.

The Elizabeth City Downtown Committee came up with the idea of The Farmers Market several years ago and it has been a huge success ever since. Although Farmers and their crops were the primary emphasis of the market, it has grown to include a variety of other products, either baked or made by hand by the vendors.

We went by the market this past weekend, to observe the level of patronage being served. Despite the fact that the market has been operating all summer, the customer base is still coming and the vendors believe that it is a good venue to display their products. Many of the vendors are repeaters, year after year, which shows that the Market is economically viable for all concerned.
