NEWS1 Golf Ball drop pic 2AURORA – This town has seen its share of economic setbacks, most recently the closing of Aurora Hometown Supermarket. All the more reason, say Chamber of Commerce officials, to ramp up the community’s existing assets, which includes the phenomenally popular Aurora Fossil Festival, always scheduled for the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

In a joint statement released this week, Festival Co-Chairmen Gail Phelps and Wayne Sawyer have made it clear that the May 22, 23 & 24 event will feature several outstanding, high-profile enhancements – all meant to propel the annual Festival into a destination happening, attracting attendees from throughout the Southeast.

The Official Golf Ball Drop – where one lucky person can win up to $1,000 – certainly fits the category of upgrades. Over the next six weeks, festival organizers hope to sell many, many $10 ‘chances’ – each entry represented by a numbered golf ball.

And then, on the morning of Sunday, May 24, a helicopter will fly over the town, aiming hundreds of numbered golf balls for a ‘pin placement’ located dead center in the ball field of a local school.

“We’ll dig out all of the balls that land in the cup,” explained Sawyer, “and the first ball in – the one at the bottom of the cup – is our big winner!”

To enter the Official Golf Ball Drop, send your check or money order to Aurora Fossil Festival, c/o Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 326, Aurora, N.C. 27806. These donations may be in any multiple of $10. Please include your name and phone number. All entries will be acknowledged and notified of the golf ball numbers purchased — $10 per ball. Or, track down any Chamber member, or call this newspaper at (252) 249-6035.

Total prize money to be awarded depends upon the number of chances sold.

“My odds of winning this thing are better than any $10 scratch-off that I buy at the convenience store,” said one wag, who asked not to be identified.
