Law enforcement to share details on drug trafficking arrests

Newport man charged in Dollar General larceny
On February 23, 2023 Carteret County detectives arrested Michael Bryan Ward, 54, of George Taylor Road, Newport after citizens identified him from a surveillance image released by the Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
The image captured Ward after he snatched an employee’s personal cell phone and fled the Bogue Dollar General located at 5530 Hwy 24, Newport. Viewers were quick to identify Ward who has a history of criminal activity.
Ward was charged with one felony count of larceny and released on a $30,000.00 bond. Ward is scheduled to have a first court appearance tomorrow morning.

Morehead City man charged with sexual exploitation following ICAC Investigation
On February 22, 2023 Detectives with the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit and the Morehead City Police Department arrested Randy Wade Jackson, 37, of Morehead City, NC.
Jackson was charged with two-counts of Third-Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor (possession of child sex abuse materials) pursuant to a joint undercover ICAC investigation involving the Morehead City Police Department. Equipment used to facilitate these crimes also was seized.
Jackson is currently being held in the Carteret County Detention Center under a $100,000.0…

Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in identifying these individuals. The male and female are persons of interest in a fraud investigation. The male is driving a dark in color Toyota Tacoma with and LED light bar on the front. The female is driving a blue or silver in color Nissan Altima. Down East man charged in Overdose Death
On February 20, 2023, Deputies arrested Hugh Crandall Willis Jr, 34, of Gloucester, NC. Willis was charged with distributing Fentanyl which resulted in the overdose death of Bethany JoAlison Styron, age 25, of Davis, NC.
This arrest was result of a death investigation that started on July 30, 2022, when Styron died from a Fentanyl overdose.
Pursuant to this investigation, Willis has been charged with Death by Distribution and Sell/Deliver of Schedule II Controlled Substance. Willis is being held in the Carteret County Detention Center under a $150,000 secured bond.

Youngster dresses like 104-year-old friend!
For Jackson Childers (grandson of Roy Whaley of Cove City and son of Casey Whaley Childers), the 100th day of Kindergarten came with excitement. Each member of the kindergarten class was asked to ‘dress like a 100 year old’ with suspenders, canes, gray hair, walkers and glasses. The more Jackson talked it over, he wanted to dress exactly like his real life friend, Jim Boswell.

A recreational spring season for ocellated (Gulf and summer) flounder will not occur in 2023, as preliminary data from the 2022 recreational flounder season (Sept. 1-30, 2022) indicates that removals of southern flounder exceeded the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) by 25,000 pounds. The 2023 recreational quota and season must be adjusted based on the previous year’s data. The current recreational TAC is based on the most recent stock assessment that indicated southern flounder is overfished with overfishing occurring.
